As discussed in our story on modern kitchens, it can be hard to distinguish between modern and contemporary. "Contemporary" typically means of the moment or current, the design of right now.
It can be tough to distinguish between modern and contemporary, and for good reason. Many spaces are both modern and contemporary, and people often use the terms interchangeably, but there are differences in look and terminology.
Many people are at a loss when it comes to defining their style. Some people know what they like but are afraid of getting the terms wrong, or they’re afraid of being pigeon-holed into one style when they feel like they’re in between a few different ones.
