Material type. Your material choice matters greatly to the look of stained cabinets, while for paint-grade cabinets, solid wood material relates more to the quality of construction. Stained oak, cherry and alder are three commonly used materials (there are many others) and each takes stain and shows wood grains differently.
This goes beyond the scope of your project, and cuts more to the picture in your mind of how the installed cabinets should look and operate. You do not need to have all the answers, but you should at least conceptualize what your finished picture might look like. Be prepared for this vision to morph a bit as you get into the design phase, but take the time to form a picture in your mind.
Inset cabinet doors. Most cabinets built in place in kitchens in the early 1900s have inset doors. Small hinges are mounted right on the face frame (the visible frame around the cabinet opening) or just inside it; the hinges are often visible when the door is shut.
There are three basic structural components to a cabinet: the box, the shelves and the drawers. Each can be constructed in a number of ways. generally come four ways: boxed and ready to install in standard dimensions, boxed and ready to assemble, semi-custom and custom.
