Advantages: Stainless steel offers top-notch durability that stands up to even commercial kitchens and their rigorous standards for cleanliness. It is nonporous and nonstaining, resistant to heat and easy to clean. It also has a life expectancy of nearly a century. Design purists will enjoy its potential for integral sinks and backsplashes.
When choosing a backsplash it’s best to think about what you want in the space. Are you a big cook? You’ll want something that doesn’t stain or require hours of scrubbing to clean up. On a budget? Intersperse a pricier tile you like with a cheaper option. After a high resale value? Skip the focal point and stick to something simple with clean lines. Nervous about color? Pick a bold paint color to use on walls instead.
Composed of smaller pieces of wood, butcher block can make great use of reclaimed or repurposed material. Sustainable butcher block can come from diverse sources, such as reclaimed shipping pallets or deconstructed buildings. Your knives will love this surface and, after it shows some age, you can just sand the wood a bit and refinish with a food-grade natural oil.
Clean-lined cabinetry. Craftsman style eschews fuss and frills in favor of pure function, and cabinets should follow suit. Straightforward frameless or flat-panel doors, perhaps with simple glass panes, fall in step with the aesthetic. Craftsman cabinets lack carved detailing or other ornamentation but display the joinery proudly — proof of the artisan at work.
