I recently learned that several universities now offer advanced degrees in Environmental Decision Making. I’m not surprised. Even after years of practicing sustainable design, I still find that sussing out the best green products can be challenging. There are many environmental factors to consider, plus there’s a constant barrage of new, better, greener products. So, save for signing up for a postdoctorate program, what’s a guy or gal to do?
Stow storage in the surface. This overhanging countertop is super clever. Not only does it create a seating space, but it contains three nifty drawers too. But it gets better — a simple partition creates storage for glasses above the built-in wine cooler.
Organic materials. Surfaces with a connection to the earth feel most at home in Asian-style kitchens. Consider woods, subdued stone or even butcher block. More contemporary materials, such as concrete or glass, have a place here as well, but be sure to balance them with natural ones so that the kitchen doesn’t feel cold or harsh.
Bigger is not always better, especially when we’re talking kitchens. Small kitchens are usually more efficient workspaces than large ones. Space and good design aren’t exclusive to a large kitchen — all you need are some good small kitchen decorating ideas that keep your small space organized, functional and beautiful.
