Inset cabinet doors. Most cabinets built in place in kitchens in the early 1900s have inset doors. Small hinges are mounted right on the face frame (the visible frame around the cabinet opening) or just inside it; the hinges are often visible when the door is shut.
Chevron backsplash. A simple chevron pattern looks especially fresh and fun in vibrant turquoise and white. The yellow pots on the stove here really pop against the blue and white tile — and the palette would work equally well the opposite way, with turquoise pots against yellow and white tile.
Walk into any home supply store and it’s easy to see that the selection of tiles for your kitchen backsplash is endless. But beyond simple tile, there are plenty of kitchen backsplash ideas to give your space extra style and a distinctive edge. Choosing something that’s a little out of the ordinary is also a great way to inject your personal style into a space that’s often a bit basic or even bland.
You’ll feel good about your selection and add personality and richness from the wood’s history. I look for wood that has a story — maybe it’s salvaged from some iconographic building or even from the project’s remodel. Just remember, wood is more susceptible to damage by water and heat, so it’s best located away from the sink, dishwasher and range. An island is a good option.
